Who we are?
The Disability Advisory
Group (DAG) was set up by the college in 2006 to give a voice to students and staff with a disability. Several meetings
were held with students to ensure there was representation from the different campuses and to cover a range of disabilities.
Some staff came too.
What do we do?
We have a responsibility to support the action plan in the college's Disability
Equality Scheme. We make sure the college policies and procedures support people with
disabilities. We monitor course reports to check the achievement
results are good and there are no issues preventing people with disabilities from staying on a course. We highlight issues for people with disabilities e.g. teaching / estates.
When do we meet?
Meetings are Monday nights at the moment, starting with a sandwich buffet from 4.45pm and finishing by 7pm.
Where are the meetings?
Meetings are usually at St. Brycedale
or Stenton Campus and a mini bus or taxi is provided.
What are our successes?
The Attendance Policy was changed so people with a disability do not have to disclose this on the absence
form. The form now lets you tick that the Learning Support team have information that links to absence.
Improved
access to the lift with a standardised lift code.
Prevention of abuse by non-disabled users through the issuing
of lift passes and monitoring by staff.
A leaf blower being purchased for the Priory Campus as during Autumn the
pathway going down the hill got slippery underfoot after it had rained.
In the estates budget a handrail for the
hill at Priory Campus has been included. Tenders for this are at present being sought so the Resources Committee can
approve.
How often do we meet?
There are 3 or 4 meetings
a year. Meetings take place 2 weeks before the College Diversity Committee so that this committee can take forward any
recommendations from the DAG.
What have we done to involve more people with
disabilities?
DAG posters have been created with contact details.
Creation of focus groups
for specific disabilities.
Open Days - students with disabilities could possibly be present to increase peoples'
awareness of individuals with additional support needs.
An open evening was held last year.
